Let’s admit it – there is nothing more refreshing than a quick weekend trip after a tiring week at the office. And, if you are in Delhi, there are plenty of options to hit the road for a quick-trip (one day) or for a slightly longer one (2-3 days). Here is a list of top road trips from Delhi that you can do over a weekend. At the end of the list, we have even added a few longer road trips from delhi that are really awesome!

If you are also one of them who enjoys life to the fullest and is interested in having a good road trip from Delhi, we have compiled a list for you. Simply hop in a car or a motorbike, the choice is completely yours, and enjoy the journey. You can do these road trips from Delhi solo or with family/friends. And the best part – you can stop wherever you want, you can eat in whichever dhabas you prefer!

If you are planning to take these weekend trips post-COVID-19 lock-downs, you need to be careful. Although short road-trips from Delhi are one of the safest travel options after the peak of the pandemic is over, but everyone still needs to take precautions. Try to avoid crowded places. If you rent a car or bike, don’t forget to wash/sanitise it properly before driving.

Road Trips from Delhi within 200 kms

Let’s start this with the relatively shorter trips. Road trips within 200 kms can easily be covered in a few hours. So, some of these can even be day-trips!

Road Trip to MURTHAL

‘Murthal ke parathe’ is most likely to be the first thought which will come to most Delhiites when you say – let’s go for a quick road trip!

Murthal, a village in Sonipat District of Haryana, is just an hour and a half ride from Delhi on NH-44. Over the last couple of decades, Murthal has turned into a famous stop for a gastronomic ride. And a visit to Murthal without tasting the delicacies of Amrik Sukhdev is practically incomplete!

â–º TRIVIA: you can even go there at midnight and enjoy some parathas and chai !

Road Trip to NEEMRANA FORT

Situated in Alwar, Rajasthan, Neemrana is a primitive historic town with a blithe spirit that makes it a perfect destination for a summer getaway. Snuggled in the Aravalli ranges, Neemrana Fort is an enchanting historical beauty. This place is a unique coalescence of the bygone era and modernity. A perfectly serene holiday destination during weekends.

â–º BEST TIME OF THE YEAR: Any time is fine, but try to avoid the monsoons.
â–º TRIVIA: The route, NH-44, is lined with happening dhabas. Not to miss – Surya Dhaba and Old Rao Dhaba.

Road Trip to BHARATPUR BIRD SANCTUARY

This one is for the bird lovers!
The Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary or Keoladeo National Park is amongst the finest bird sanctuaries, not just in India, but globally. It is a breeding ground for a lot of rare bird species, including the Siberian crane. And hence it was declared as a world heritage site by UNESCO in the 1980s.

The route to Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary is one of the most beautiful ones – the Yamuna expressway.

Road Trips from Delhi more than 200 kms

These weekend road trips from Delhi are slightly longer in distance. In general, a 400+ kms trip (200 km each side) is practically difficult to be done in a day. These are good for normal weekends and best for long weekends.

Road Trip to MUSSOORIE

One can drive to Mussoorie for the weekend from Delhi. Also known as Queen of Hills, this place is always a seduction to all its visitors. Located at a height of 7000 feet above the sea-level, the majestic view of the Shivalik range in all its grandeur, the greenery on the hill and the rich variety of flora and fauna will captivate your senses. You should visit the place for a simple stroll to the Mall road. The second highest peak in the city, Gun Hill is also there making it all look dreamier than anything. Standing on the top of the hill, you get a great view of the entire valley along with the very famous Doon school. At a distance of about 6 kilometres from the place is a marvel of nature locally known as Jharipani falls. If you are a book lover, then you wouldn’t want to miss the opportunity to meet “Ruskin Bond”.

While in Mussoorie, try not to miss out on the important landmarks such as Sister’s Bazaar, St. Paul’s Church, Kempty falls, Cable car from Jhulaghat to Gun Hill, Dhanaulti and Sukanda Temple; Landour, benog Sanctuary. Also, don’t forget to take a stroll on the Mall road.

â–º TRIVIA: If you are starting early in the morning or driving the planes overnight, it usually will take 7-8 hours, depending on the breaks you would like to take. You may find a lot of food joints like Mcdonalds, Sagar Ratna, Haldirams on the way which are opened 24*7 on NH-58. Our suggestion: try out Cheetal Grant.

Road Trip to AGRA

Agra – home to the world famous TAJ MAHAL !

Agra is one of the most preferred destinations for a one-day road trip from Delhi. Although Agra is known for the Taj Mahal, it also has several structures and relics from the Mughal period that are scattered throughout the city. You can explore the city for these relics and even make an adventure out of it. Agra is quite accessible by road being connected by the Yamuna Expressway.

â–º BEST TIME OF THE YEAR: October to March is best; Actually, anytime is good, except summer.

Road Trip to RISHIKESH

Famous by the alias – Yoga Capital of the World, Rishikesh is also known for offering its visitors thrilling activities such as river rafting and bungee jumping. This hill town must be added to your list of weekend road trips from Delhi – be it with family or friends.

Road Trip to JAIPUR

From our personal experience, the Jaipur – Delhi route is probably the best road trip that I have driven in India. And if you are a regular reader of this blog, you would know that we have done plenty of road trips.

The three cities of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur are collectively known as the Golden Triangle. This is because of their historic and cultural importance and due to the large number of tourists they host every year. Instead of opting for a guided tour, taking a road trip of the Golden Triangle will provide a unique travel experience. Besides the famous Taj Mahal in Agra and the Hawa Mahal in Jaipur, the other major attractions that you can cover on this journey include the ghost town of Fatehpur Sikri and the stunning Amer Fort located just about 11 kilometres from Jaipur.

â–º BEST TIME OF THE YEAR: similar to Agra, try to avoid summer.

The below mentioned 4 road trips don’t actually qualify as ‘weekend trips’ from Delhi, but without them, this list won’t be complete. These are more than 500 kms from Delhi, but will give you ultimate satisfaction as a traveller.

Road Trip to LEH

Any blog-post about road trips in northern India is incomplete without mentioning Leh! A road trip from Delhi to Leh is one of the most sought after, not only for Indians but for foreign travellers alike.

It is important to note that the Manali-Leh highway remains open only for a few months every year. Make sure to check the dates before planning your trip.

Road Trip to SPITI

Spiti – the land of the Lamas – is a cold desert mountain valley in Himachal Pradesh. The name “Spiti” means “The middle land”, i.e. the land between Tibet and India.

This valley doesn’t have much inhabitants, so if you’re looking for some secluded place to get away from your busy life, Spiti Valley is just the place for you.

Road Trip to MANALI

The Himalayan town of Manali is one of the oldest and most popular mountain destinations in India. From the exquisite views of the Greater Himalayas, ancient Hindu and Buddhist communities, and the vibrant international culture has made this place a respite for the wandering souls and travellers with a love for quirky locales. The journey (by road) to this fascinating town can be equally awesome and hence its one of the most spectacular road trips from Delhi.

Road Trip to DHARAMSHALA

We did this road trip to Dharamshala and Mcleodganj during an office-trip to Delhi. Although, many would say that Dharamshala and Mcleodganj are cliches, but that doesn’t make these hill stations any less stunning.

While you are in Dharamshala, check out the Hobo Hostel. Situated in the lap of nature, Hobo Hostel is a really unique place to stay.
